Starting a Blog : Blogging Consistently - III

As exciting as starting a blog can be, posting regularly can pose a challenge. Blogging consistently is a habit and to flex that muscle, you need to exercise (in this case, write and post) regularly. “Consistency” is a buzzword online. However, being consistent isn’t an automatic response to learning about consistency. In this blog post, we look at the relevance of blogging consistently and how to achieve consistency.

Why is consistency important?

Consistency isn’t only a skill new bloggers can build. For experienced bloggers looking to level-up their content, it is an opportunity to create a routine around their publishing process. There are a couple of benefits to blogging consistently; some for you (the blogger) and others for the readers. For you(the blogger), it is a great way to observe your growth with writing and on the other hand, it establishes a pattern in the minds of your readers.

How do you achieve consistency?

Having an understanding of the benefits of blogging consistently is only the starting point. To achieve this consistency, here are a few actionable steps:

Brainstorming Ideas

For a new blog, it is great to have a niche. Having a niche is an opportunity to narrow-down ideas floating on your mind as you brainstorm. We wrote about carving a niche for yourself, you can read it here. The goal of brainstorming is to ensure that you do not run out of content ideas. To create a content bank of ideas, list ideas floating in your mind in a spreadsheet or document. Online conversations in your niche can be a great place to source content ideas. Searching on Subreddits, Twitter and putting out a social media post asking for readers interest are a couple of ways to source content ideas. Most importantly, do not forget to include ideas from your online research in your content bank.

Creating Realistic Content Calendar and Publishing Schedule

Creating a content calendar and publishing schedule is a great way to set up a process to keep publishing to your blog. However, it is important that the content calendar and publishing schedule are realistic. A good way to to do is audit yourself and your blog. Looking at your past publishing pattern, you’ll have to answer a few questions:

👉 How many blogs do you publish in a month?

👉 How much time does it take you to write a blog post?

👉 How much time are you willing to commit to blogging monthly, weekly, etc? Feel free to narrow this down to hours you can commit to blogging.

👉 Realistically, how many blog posts can you write in a month?

From the information you get auditing yourself and the blog, you will decide on a frequency for blogging monthly and create a content calendar.

Dedicate Time to Write

Once you have your content calendar set up, the next hurdle to cross is writing the blogposts. Knowing how long you spend writing (inclusive of research) a blog post is great as it gives you a sense of time to allocate to writing.

Taking Breaks?

As vital as a blogging consistently is, we are humans and life happens. There are days you may be unable to keep up with the schedule you have set and it is good to take a break.
